As a Leader, Here are Ways to Get to Know Your Employees

As the team leader, it’s your responsibility to get to know your employees. You want them to feel comfortable with you. It’s easier to work with them or assign tasks if they don’t feel tense around you. Here are some tips to get to know your employees and build an excellent relationship with them.

Open your office to everyone

Some bosses tend to close their doors. They act like they are superiors, and they make everyone feel it. You shouldn’t do it. You have to open your office to everyone and allow your employees to talk to you whenever they want. You might have a corner room away from everyone else, but you can always keep your doors open.

Organise team-building activities

Some employees do the same thing at work. It ends up as a boring routine. The best way to solve the problem is by organising team building activities. It allows everyone to get to know each other. You will also have a chance to know your employees deeper. You can bring everyone to a fun and relaxing location. If not, you can invite someone to come over and become the facilitator. Team building activities only happen for a few days a year, so you have to make the most of it.

Organise fun events

You might also want to organise fun events where everyone forgets about working for a while. For instance, you can host a funfair day. It’s not only an opportunity to know your employees but their family members too. They can bring someone from the family to come and spend the day. Besides, it’s something that you didn’t do for a long time due to the pandemic. Check out https://www.wearetricycle.co.uk if you want to host one.

Take your time to drop by different departments

When was the last time you visited a department and talked to the employees? If it’s been a while, you should start doing it. Make it a habit to drop by different departments and see how people are doing. However, make sure that you don’t talk about work alone. Otherwise, they will think that you’re micromanaging. Your goal is to make your employees like hanging out with you. You will also know what they’re talking about.

Be approachable

Try to smile as often as you can, especially when you’re in front of your employees. When you have a scary appearance, they won’t like to work with you. If you have to say constructive criticism, you should be gentle. Make sure your employees understand what you say and the reason for saying it. Otherwise, they will think that you’re mean to them. Sometimes, a terrible boss is a reason for some employees to leave their job.

It takes a while to get to know your employees. Start by opening your doors and allowing them to approach you. You don’t have to be friends with everyone. Getting to know them personally and professionally is good enough. If you can build a good relationship, everything else will follow.
