I am going to India on Sunday. Yes, you read that right.
My visa came through last night and I am off on Sunday afternoon. Despite missing the Super Bowl (Go Giants!), I am pretty excited. However, I have had little time to prepare and basically know nothing.
The first part of the trip will be to see Unilever projects in Mumbai and Bangalore. Then I am on my own. I will be starting in Mumbai, but am willing to go anywhere (within reason), so I am hoping some of you can help me out.
What should I do, see, eat, experience, visit, etc in India? If any of you out there are India-based I would love to find time to meet up while I am there. I basically am open to all ideas so hit me with what you know. Any advice would be appreciated from what to pack to where to sleep.

From a Mumbai native (unfortunately, I am not living in Mumbai currently): Try to visit some of the fishing villages alongside the beaches in Mumbai (Versova, Chowpatty). Try some Maharashtrian or Goan food in Mumbai if you enjoy sea food.
Definitely Nasik, about 4hrs train ride from Mumbai. Off the beaten, a real gem.
Hello Dr. Bellemare! I had the pleasure to meet you during Dr. J's book club. It's so exciting that you are going to India! I'd love to hear more about what you think after you get back. How long are you going to be there? If you are going to Mumbai, I'd really suggest to check out Pune if you have time. It's 4 hours drive from Mumbai and a really nice city. If you go a bit further, you will reach Jamkhed - the rural health model I studied last summer as part of my research project. (http://jamkhed.org/). Please let me know if you need any more suggestions! (I backpacked by myself for a month in India and saw some really interesting stuff that a regular touristy trip might not encounter. I also blogged throughout my trip here: http://chexsummer.tumblr.com/ I LOVE India and would love to help out!) - Chex from UNC
Travel light. Wear sandals. Loose boxer shorts! Indiamike.com is the best forum for lots of tips. Head south from Bangalore to the beautiful hill country.
